The Power of Garlic

Kehoe Family Chiropractic

Enjoying life to the fullest, today and tomorrow.

Garlic, along with onions,  is a member of the lily or Allium family, which contains a variety of powerful sulfur-containing compounds that give it is pungent odor and it’s powerful healing effects.

Garlic, especially fresh garlic, contains anti-viral and antibacterial properties that have been protective against the common cold, the flu virus, Candida yeast, and even  pathogenic microbes including tuberculosis and botulism.

Garlic may reduce heart attack, stroke or peripheral vascular disease, by making the blood slippery and prevent plaquing.  Many studies show that garlic alone lowered cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and blood pressure.  Nitric oxide formation is stimulated when you eat garlic.  Nitric oxide is responsible for significantly improving the blood flow in vessels and therefore improves the health of the organs and tissues supplied by these blood vessels.

If you have heart disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides or high blood pressure, fresh garlic should be a regular staple in your diet.

Text Box: Why not garlic pills?

Although there have been many studies presenting the health benefits of garlic pills, it is not known if garlic pills provide all the benefits of fresh garlic. The most effective health promoting vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, come from natural forms. Natural garlic contains all the beneficial components in a bio-available form. Bioavailability is important, because we want to get the most benefit from the nutrients we put in our body. Fresh garlic contains chemicals in a combination, still unknown to researchers, in a formula our body can recognize, and utilize more efficiently and effectively when compared to supplements manufactured in a pill or capsule.

Why not try a Garlic Sandwich?

Ingredients

1 Bulb of garlic
2-3 teaspoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Square of aluminum foil
* whole-grain bread or crackers

Heat oven to 400 degrees F.  Place the garlic bulb sideways on a cutting board and slice off the top, so each individual clove is exposed.  Do not peel off the outer husk.  Tear off a square of aluminum foil. Place the bulb in the middle of the foil, cut side up.  Drizzle the olive oil over the exposed cloves, allowing to drain to the bottom.  Wrap the foil around the bulb, and secure the corners in a tent formation, being sure the aluminum foil does not come into contact with the exposed cloves.

Bake for 25-35 minutes or until you poke it with a fork, the garlic is smooth.

Allow the roasted garlic to cool.  Unwrap and squeeze sides of garlic skin together pushing out the roasted garlic cloves.

Spread on a whole grain piece of bread or use as a spread on your favorite sandwich.   DELICOUS!
